Aurora, also called The Gateway to the Rockies, is one of the dominant cities in the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. With 361,710 people residing in Aurora, it was hailed as the third most populous place in Colorado and ranked number 54 in the entire country.

Did you know that Aurora was first known as Fletcher? It was named in honor of Donald Fletcher, a real estate tycoon in Colorado in the late 19th century. In 1907, the town officials decided to rename it to Aurora. Now, the home rule municipality is divided into three counties namely Arapahoe, Adams, and Douglas. It is also home to over 80 neighborhoods.

With its collection of towering buildings, Aurora is considered to be Denver’s largest suburbs. The city’s total area was 142.7 square miles as of the 2000 data. However, due to further developments in 2010, the city had expanded its size to 154.7 square miles, exceeding Denver’s land area of 153.0 square miles. Now, Aurora is the 54th largest U.S. city in terms of land area.

When it comes to climate, Aurora is under the BSk Köppen climate category. This means that the city experiences a semi-parched and high-desert climate. During the summer season, temperature ranges from mild to hot. From April to July, the city also usually gets about a dozen of tornado warnings all throughout the season. Nothing to worry because the tornadoes are generally powerless and short lived. July is considered the warmest month while December is the coldest month. During winter, the first snowfall in Aurora happens by the end of October and the last snowfall usually occurs in April.

Other attractions to visit are the Art Deco-style KOA Building of 1934, Lowry Building 800, and 1955 to 1958 headquarters of the U.S. Air Force Academy.

If you love culture and the arts, the Aurora Fox Theatre and Arts Center is a 245-seat performing arts facility located in the Aurora Cultural Arts District. There’s also the Aurora Symphony Orchestra that started in 1978. Lastly, there’s the Aurora History Museum, which has a permanent exhibit the city’s rich history.

Fun fact about Aurora is that Cherry Creek State Park, located on the southwestern edge of Aurora, was chosen as the location for the papal mass of the 8th World Youth Day with Pope John Paul II. Reportedly, the event was attended by an estimate of 500,000 people.

In 2004, Aurora was honored as the Sports Illustrated magazine’s 50th Anniversary “Sportstown” for Colorado because of its exemplary involvement in facilitating and enhancing sports. The city attracts more than 30 regional and national sports tournaments annually to Aurora’s fields, which include the 220-acre Aurora Sports Park that opened in 2003.
