Brighton Tidbits

Brighton is a dependent municipality that can be found in the Adams and Weld counties. The city is known as the county seat of Adams County, Colorado. Brighton got its name from one of New York’s beaches called Brighton Beach.

Brighton was founded in the 1870s and started out as a farming community. Before it was called Brighton, it was first known as Hughes Station. Although the town was incorporated in 1887, its history can actually be traced back to 1881 when Daniel Carmichael, a real estate agent, purchased a piece of property and named the town Brighton after his wife’s birthplace which is Brighton Beach, New York.

During this time, Brighton had only a railroad depot, a wind mill, a water tower and a station master’s house. With a population of only 175 people, Brighton was incorporated as a town on July 26, 1887. The very first mayor that ever served the town was Emory Strong.

Over the years, Brighton rose from being a hub for truck gardens and dairy farms to a booming city of industrial businesses with a population of over 37,000 residents.

Around 1885, Brighton’s first school was completed. Built by A.L. Church for $1,257, the schoolhouse is located on the 1st Street. In 1887, the Court officially recognized Brighton as a city. In 1902, Adams County became a part of Arapahoe County with Brighton as temporary county seat. Soon after, election for county seat officially commenced and Brighton became the permanent county seat when it garnered 1,103 votes.

One of the most terrifying and frustrating moments of Brighton’s history happened in 1920. It was when Brighton experienced the coldest winter and heaviest snow in seven years. This devastating event caused 500 cows to die, and both electricity and water supply were cut off.

New developments started to sprout since the 1940s. Notable changes were the construction of a hospital with 31 beds and the completion of the Adams County Administration Building. Right after the building was completed, Brighton city government decided to move and it is now Historic City Hall.

In 2006, the Brighton City Hall celebrated its 100th anniversary since its completion. Brighton was recognized as one of the “100 Best Communities for Young People” by America’s Promise Alliance and ING.

The Eagle View Adult Recreation became the city’s new senior center. The senior center is conveniently located near the Platte Valley Medical Center commonly. Aside from that, Brighton commemorated its 125th anniversary in 2012.

Among the many learning institutions located in the city are Henderson Elementary, Overland Middle School, Brighton High School, and Prairie View High School. This proves that Brighton is also a city conducive for learning.
