Centennial is a dependent municipality that is located in Arapahoe County, Colorado. The city is a part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Being the tenth most crowded municipality, its incorporation in 2001 was the largest throughout the history.
On February 7, 2001, the city of Centennial was established. It was incorporated by a portion of the unincorporated Arapahoe and Castlewood and South Glenn. It was through the efforts its citizens that’s why the incorporation pushed through. The city was officially named Centennial after they voted to incorporate on September 12, 2000. The city name was a way to honor the centennial year of the United States Declaration of Independence.
Also known as the Centennial State, the city of Centennial was incorporated on a contract to maintain city taxes at 1%. Because of the city’s commendable security, it was recognized as United States’ 15th safest city. In 2010, Centennial’s population reached over 100,000 residents and as of 2016, its most recent population estimate was around 109,932 people. Now, the city has a total of 36,200 households in the city. The median age is 37 years old, which is 2 years higher than the national average age.
The city of Centennial is roughly 27.9 square miles. It is divided in half by Interstate 25, with most of its business and entertainment establishments situated in the west. The city’s bounds are pretty uneven especially on the eastern portion of Centennial. Because of this irregularity, some important establishments are not in the city. Take for example the Centennial Airport, or the Arapahoe County Airport. The airport is next to Centennial and is located on an unincorporated area in Arapahoe County.
The city is mostly hills, gullies and ravines, and its open fields are commonly corresponded with trails and parks such as the Willow Creek Trail, the Dry Creek Dam, the Highline Canal Trail, DeKoevend Park, and Big Dry Creek and Little Dry Creek Trails. The city is also home to many native wildlife, which is proof of Colorado’s diverse ecosystem. Centennial is best known for their coyotes, but unfortunately, its growing population poses a threat to the family pets of many residents.
Economically, two of the largest companies in the city are Cinemedia and United Launch Alliance. According to the city’s financial report in 2011, the top five employers of the city that provides employment to many people are Oppenheimer Funds, Comcast, United Launch Alliance, US Foods, and Jones International University.
As for its government, the city follows a council-manager system that is composed of eight members. This system of government limits the power to raise and collect taxes. In recent years, Centennial recently held a home rule charter convention and the new charter was approved on June 10, 2008.
Unique attractions found in Centennial are the very first IKEA in the entire state, and the headquarters of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority. On July 27, 2011, IKEA opened their first store in Colorado and it remains to be the second-biggest IKEA store in the country. IKEA Centennial was even recognized as one of the city’s “Project of the Year” in 2011.
Up to day, Centennial continues to grow and the city promises a great future for its citizens in years to come. Centennial proves to be a safe and stable city to live in.
