Thornton is a city in Colorado that’s located in two counties: Adams and Weld. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Broomfield, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area and the city is only 10 miles away of downtown Denver. In 2010, Thornton reported a population of 118,772 residents. That’s nearly a 50% increase from its 2000< population! Today, Thornton is considered the 6th most populated city in Colorado.

The city began as a construction project of about 5,000 homes. The new community was proposed to be called Thornton to commemorate Governor Dan Thornton. On September 21, 1953, the construction of the first 30 houses officially started. Three years after, Thornton became a city with only a square mile in size.

Like any other cities in the state of Colorado, the town offers numerous landmarks to visit for both locals and tourists. In 1963, Thornton was able to secure a water supply by buying the Northwest Utilities. In 1964, the city extended its limits and added around 920 acres of land to Thornton. A 17-year-old designed a city seal and in 1965, Thornton adopted the seal with the motto: “City of Planned Progress.
