Gutted: 7 Signs You Need to Replace Your Gutters

The gutters of your home don’t only add to curb appeal, they also serve a function. They’re the biggest player when it comes to protecting your home against rain.

Your gutters are there to keep any potentially expensive moisture-related problems at bay, and even though they may not seem important, we guarantee you’ll see a negative change if they’re not functioning properly.

Although your gutter system could be the best of the best, they will always need replacement at some time or another.

Do you have leaking gutters? Here are the telltale signs that it’s time for a professional gutter replacement.

1. Spotting Cracks

Spotting cracks in your gutters is the first sign that they may need replacement. Although, the spotting of cracks isn’t as easy as it sounds.

You’ll definitely be able to see larger cracks on a dry, clear day but smaller ones won’t show until there’s a downpour of rain. Cracks in your gutters defeat the objective of keeping the rain away from the sides of your home, as water will simply leak through. Much like a bucket with holes in it.

If there are one or two individual cracks, they can be replaced. But if there are too many, you’re in for a gutter replacement.

2. Spying Peeling Paint

We know that gutters generally aren’t painted, what you’re looking for here are spots where the paint is peeling from the side of your home.

If your gutter system isn’t working properly, then water will create damage in the same spot repetitively and the paint will begin to peel. The gutters above the affected area are most likely the culprits.

3. Check For Rotting

This is one step further from peeling paint, if you didn’t catch the peeling paint sign in time then you’re most likely dealing with rot. Particularly on wooden homes, the malfunctioning gutter will allow rain to pour over the same area again and again.

Walk around your home and look for window sills and door frames that are beyond the peeling of paint and are displaying signs of rot, the nearest gutter is most likely the piece that needs to be replaced.

4. Mold and Mildew

Examining both the exterior and interior of your home for mold and mildew is necessary to see if you need gutter replacement. Check around the foundation of your home for signs of green patches.

If the area is very small, it might only be a clogged downspout. If not, then the mold and mildew are definite signs that you need your gutters replaced.

5. Broken Seams and Fasteners

The pieces that fit your gutters together are your seams and fasteners. A simple inspection of each of these joins will tell you whether the system is functioning correctly.

If the fasteners and seams are evidently not in place or seem dislodged then a replacement is due.

6. Separation of Gutters

This sign follows on from the broken seams and fasteners, although they may not evidently be broken, in this case, you’re looking for a gutter pipe that is very obviously hanging down and not doing its duty.

In this case, a repair won’t do the job, you need gutter replacement to get the whole system up and running again.

7. Sagging Gutters

Sagging gutters are a big no-no. Your gutters need to maintain a proper pitch around the entire house, if they don’t, water will continue to pool up in the same areas and keep spilling over. Possibly, this could erode landscapes and create mold problems in the long run.

In this case, replace your gutters immediately.

Gutter Replacement Success

Gutter replacement is not the same job as gutter maintenance, it is not a job for an amateur.

Ensure that you do your research when selecting a gutter replacement professional, check their credentials to save yourself trouble in the long run.

Why Do You Need An Annual Roof Inspection?

With so many homeowner expenses, you might not think of having a roof inspection. If it’s not leaking, then you figure it must be fine.

Many homeowners think this way. It’s the “out of sight, out of mind” misconception. Unfortunately, by ignoring your roof, it can cause roofing failures.

Even an unnoticed leak can turn into a major roofing nightmare for your home.
An annual roofing inspection can detect any flaws or structural breakdown of your roofing material. You could have a leak right now and not even know it.

Sometimes it can take months or years of leaking before water damage shows up in your home.

Read more about the benefits of roof inspects and how they can find problems before they happen.

Why You Need an Annual Roof Inspection

The best maintenance you can do for your roof is having a roof inspection company check it out. If you have an annual inspection, you can avoid serious roof damage, such as curling, blistering, algae growth and missing shingles.

Roof inspections and preventative maintenance save you money on major roof repairs. Not only that, your roof will have a longer life.

Also, consider your family’s safety. When you hire a roof inspector, you can prevent any risk of injury if your roof has structural damage.

It’s important to have your roof inspected after violent weather, such as hail storms, wind, hurricanes, tornadoes, and blizzards.

Another benefit of roof inspections is if you do have damage, the roof inspection company makes a detailed report of the damage, repair recommendations and the estimated cost. This makes it easier to file a claim with your insurance company.

Roofing Inspection Check List

Heavy rainfall, wind, and snow are not nice to your roof. A roof inspector will check for any signs of damage caused by weather exposure and harsh conditions.

Most inspectors check for the following signs of wear and tear that cause roof erosion:

  • Leaves, dirt, and debris, especially in gutters
  • Clogged downspouts
  • Cracked roof tiles or shingles
  • Damaged flashing
  • Leaks around skylights and chimneys
  • Punctures or holes in the roof
  • Soft or ballooned areas
  • Joint Seals

If your roof inspector finds any damage to your roof, you can prioritize your repairs. Schedule the repairs according to the damage. When you know which repairs you need, you can set up a budget for the scheduled maintenance.

This saves you money in the long run because you can extend the life of your existing roof instead of replacing the whole thing due to major damage and neglect.

Be Proactive About Roof Maintenance

Whether you’re a residential homeowner or in charge of maintaining a commercial property, mother nature batters your roof constantly. Don’t wait for the damage to happen. Be proactive in your roof maintenance before you see evidence of leaks and water stains.

When you get a roof inspection, you’ll have peace of mind knowing you’ve done your part in protecting your roof. It allows you to make a maintenance plan for budgeting for repairs and future maintenance.

Please contact us and our certified roofing specialists will do their best to schedule your roof inspection.

3 Spring Roof Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Home in Working Order

Winter can be hard on your roof. From 2000-2013, American’s claimed almost $9 million dollars in losses from hail alone! So, after the long winter months, it’s important to do some spring maintenance to keep your roof healthy for another year.

We’ve put together a list of some helpful roof maintenance tips so that you can keep your roof in great shape for many years to come! Read on to find out what they are!

1. Perform a Visual Inspection

It’s important that you go up on your roof and check to make sure things look good. If you never inspect your roof, you won’t know there is a problem until you spring a leak, and nobody wants to deal with that!

Here are a few things to keep an eye out for:

  • Check the state of your shingles. Make sure you don’t spot any peeling or cracking. In some cases, you may be able to replace just a small section of damage rather than the whole roof, but only if you catch the problem early enough.
  • Check your gutters. In addition to checking them for debris like leaves, check to see if there is a lot of asphalt accumulating in them. This could be a sign that your shingles are wearing out and may not be protecting your roof as well as they could be.
  • Clear Debris. If you find any branches or other debris, clear it off the roof.
  • Document Damage. If you find damage, take pictures. This will help with damage repair and with filing homeowners insurance claims.

It is a good idea to perform roof inspections at least once a year.

Remember to be safe. Only go out on your roof if it is dry and the slope is not too steep. Always let someone know what you’ll be doing before venturing up onto the roof, and have them check in on you.

2. Keep Your Gutters Clear

Leaves and all kinds of debris accumulate in your gutters. It’s important that you clear them out at least twice a year. Allowing them to fill up with debris will cause improper drainage which can cause damage to your roof and even the foundation of your house.

You can do it the old fashioned way, by using a ladder, gloves, and a bucket. A wet/dry vac can be a nice easy way to clear your gutters, and they sell attachments that extend your reach and have a curved end to the hose so that you can clear the gutters without the ladder.

3. That Moss Has to Go

Moss and fungus growing on your roof shingles is not a good sign. It is destructive to asphalt and wood shingles. Moss will decrease the lifespan of your roof by weakening shingles, possibly even leading to leaks.

To remove the moss, you can use a hose (not a pressure washer, you’ll damage the shingles) and a solution of 50/50 bleach and water. For detailed instructions, check out this article!

Guide: Which Types of Roofing Materials Are Best for Your Home?

There are around 10,000 severe thunderstorms in the United States each year. Depending on the storm’s severity, damage can be done to windshields, powerlines, and, of course, roofs.

This can be highly annoying to homeowners. No one enjoys random bits of water dripping from the ceiling.

But don’t worry! Here is a guide to help you find roofing materials that will keep the rain outside:

Asphalt Shingles

This is the most popular roof material, but make sure you choose the type that is right for your location’s weather.

If you feel like your town gets 99% of the 10,000 severe thunderstorms, then do not choose 3 tab shingles as they are not able to withstand high winds.

Architectural shingles are perfect for stormy areas since they can take hurricane winds and are typically installed on newer home models.

Asphalt is also cheaper than other roofing types, a characteristic which likely leads to their popularity.

Metal Roofing

Metal roofs are great because they help keep houses cooler in the summer and lower air conditioning costs.

They can also be made to look like other materials, such as wood, but without the increased maintenance that would come with those materials.

Metal roofs are also an eco-friendly option since they are both durable and recyclable.

However, they are a more expensive option and can be loud during bad weather.

Wood Roofing

If you’re desiring a designer roof, wood can be a beautiful option if you want your home to have a more natural look.

For this roofing material, it’s better to live in a location with less variation in temperatures and precipitation, as it can cause your roof to wear out more quickly.

Wood roofs also may require more maintenance and can be a more expensive option.

If you live in an area where the weather changes all the time, then this option is not for you.

However, if the cost is not a concern and you’re searching for a more natural option, then a wood roof can be a unique addition to your landscape.

Which Roofing Materials Are Right for You?

Before picking your roofing materials, first consider your area and ideal budget range.

If you’re in a dry state that doesn’t get much weather at all, then basic three tab shingles might work for you.

Have crazy weather? Then go with architectural asphalt shingles to ensure your roof stays strong.

Think you have the hottest summers on the planet? A metal roof might be just what you need to keep cool.

Or maybe you’re just looking for something pretty and unique. Then, a wood roof may be just what you need.

Ultimately, however, the best roof is the one installed correctly by professionals.

We can help! Whether you need a repair or a total roof redo, we are available to help you.
